Kenya, will work with the GSF in approximately 22 districts in three regions of the country – Nyanza Province, Coast Province and Rift Valley – where sanitation coverage is far below the national average. The rationale for choosing these areas is to fill gaps where other organizations, such as UNICEF, have not reached.

In Kenya, programme design is underway and the programme may commence in 2012, pending funding. The design has identified Communityled Total Sanitation and sanitation marketing as the main approaches of the programme. The goal is that every school and 90 percent of the households in targeted areas are using improved sanitation and hygiene by 2015. Kenya, which is not on track to meet the Millennium Development Goal target for sanitation, will work with the GSF in approximately 22 districts in three regions of the country – Nyanza Province, Coast Province and Rift Valley – where sanitation coverage is far below the national average. The rationale for choosing these areas is to fill gaps where other programmes and organizations have not reached.
