Policies and strategies
- Through the National Health Plan (1993-1996, 1996-2001, 2001-2006 and 2006-2011), the Government of Myanmar launched the Environmental Health Programme. It consists of community water supply, sanitation, air and water pollution control.
- “Sanitation for All” places in a high priority in the National Health Policy. The Government of Myanmar has been implementing the Total Sanitation Programme by increasing community awareness in sanitation and hygiene.
- In October 1995, the National Health Committee passed a resolution mandating the Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs to develop and implement a National Sanitation Strategy.
Institutions
- The implementing agency for the sanitation sector in sub-urban and rural areas is the Environmental Sanitation Division under the Department of Health.
- The Department of Development Affairs under the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs is responsible for drinking water supply.
