Darren Saywell
Darren manages a range of activities at the Headquarters of the International Water Association (IWA), primarily focusing on regional development and regional delivery, but also including advocacy and communications, task group management, technical product development, developing IWAs outreach programme and leading its post-disaster management programme.
Until January 2005, Darren was a programme manager with WSSCC at the World Health Organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. In his four years with WSSCC, Darren was responsible for the coordination of a major programme of advocacy, research and in-country activities in 30 nations.
Darren’s academic training was as a social scientist, applied initially in the fields of social housing provision and the environment and then latterly in water and sanitation service provision. He worked for seven years as a programme manager in one of the leading international academic institutes (the Water, Engineering and Development Centre at Loughborough University) before moving to WHO in Geneva. Darren’s work in the academic and international sectors has covered a broad range of topics, including excreta management, solid waste, participatory assessments and hygiene behaviour change. He has 16 years research, consultancy and teaching experience.
Darren has a PhD from Loughborough University in the UK, and an undergraduate degree in Geography from the University of Oxford. He has authored four books, contributed significantly to several others and published in academic and technical journals. He is currently serving in an advisory, technical and peer review capacity on several international initiatives. He has worked extensively in countries throughout Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
