Elections of the WSSCC Steering Committee
A people-centered approach is the foundation upon which the Collaborative Council is built and this is reflected in its organisational structure. The Collaborative Council is a membership organisation and it relies on its diverse and actively-engaged membership body both to direct and to provide credibility for its work.
Collaborative Council members are eligible to stand and vote in elections for the Steering Committee, which provides direction to the whole organisation. The duties of the Steering Committee members are described in section 1.2 of the WSSCC governance document that can be found here.
Current Elections or By-elections
In accordance with clause 2.4 of the Governance Document, the Secretariat conducted a Steering Committee election for the Small Island Developing States between 12 June and 5 July 2009.
Fifty WSSCC members were eligible to vote, of which 17 cast votes. The results were:
- Mr. Rohit Mungra (Mauritius) 9 votes
- Mr. Tasleem Hasan (Fiji) 8 votes
WSSCC congratulates both candidates for standing in this very tight election, and welcomes Mr. Mungra as the representative from the Small Island Developing States. He will join the Steering Committee at its next meeting in October 2009. Mr. Mungra presently works as Senior Advisor at the Central Water Authority, Mauritius, after serving in the same utility as its General Manager from 2000 to 2005. He has been associated with the work of the WSSCC since 1995, contributing to Vision 21 and serving as the WSSCC National Coordinator for Mauritius for over 10 years.
