Learning

Learning is an important aspect of the activities funded by the Global Sanitation Fund and takes three forms:

  • Informal learning

The Global Sanitation Fund makes information about its functioning and the activities it sponsors available to the public. This is mainly accomplished nationally through the National WASH Coalitions and globally through the WSSCC website, which involves close collaboration within the WSSCC Secretariat between the three pillars of its work, namely the Global Sanitation Fund, the Knowledge Management and the Advocacy and Communications departments.

  • Structured learning

Structured learning events are organized by the WSSCC and/or its partner organizations. They provide an opportunity for sharing and discussion of field experience. They may target audiences in the sector or other groups that do not habitually consider sanitation and hygiene issues. They may occur at global level in conjunction, for example, with the Global WASH Fora or external events such as the Stockholm World Water Week.

A particular effort, however, is made to encourage the organization of events at the local, national and regional levels that are more accessible to field practitioners in sanitation and hygiene. National WASH Coalitions provide the primary leadership for such events and are supported by the WSSCC Secretariat's networking and knowledge management team.

Country work programmes funded by the Global Sanitation Fund explicitly include plans and resources for learning events. They may be included in the scope of work for the Executing Agency.

  • Internal Global Sanitation Fund learning

The WSSCC Secretariat and the Advisory Committee are responsible for ensuring that lessons learned in individual programmes and in the overall management of the fund are systematically integrated in the Global Sanitation Fund policy and procedures.

In particular, evaluation criteria for countries and Executing Agency implementation proposals are re-examined prior to each new round of funding.
