Members of the National WASH Coalition

The WSSCC-Bangladesh chapter includes 36 organizations comprising national NGOs, international NGOs, UN organizations, government departments and donor agencies.

Focus

The chapter aims to create space for marginalized populations in accessing standard water and sanitation services and in the relevant decision-making processes working closely with grassroots' movements.

Milestones and achievements

In the second half of 2004, the chapter initiated a process of grassroots consultations, leading to the organisation of a grassroots’ voice in response to the MDGs and the Government of Bangladesh' goal to achieve hundred percent sanitation by 2010. The consultations continued in 2008 with the following activities

  • Grassroots consultation and dialogue in 300 unions
  • Four district level workshops and three division level workshop
  • National Convention of grassroots
  • Production of a sanitation fact sheet and other material

The overall objective of  the Grass Root Consultations is to create an enabling environment, platform and a space for the grassroots poor people to share their ideas and opinions, and in that way to raise their voices, so that they reach the policy makers and are able to make a dent in the policy process. Multi-stakeholder participation and inclusion of the poorest and marginalised in the national sanitation campaign is an important objective for the coalition.

For future consultations a stronger focus on women's participation is important.
