Burkina Faso

National WASH Coalition

Members of the Burkina Faso WASH coalition include WaterAid Burkina Faso, CREPA, Eau Vive, Green Cross, General Directorate for Water Resources (DGRE) within the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Fisheries, University of Ouagadougou, the 2IE (ex EIER/ETSHER), West Africa Water Partnership (WAWP), National Water Utility (ONEA).

Focus

The coalition aims to contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Burkina Faso by promoting sustainable access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for the poor.

Milestone projects and main achievements

Since the national WASH campaign launch in 2003, activities aimed at achieving the MDGs by promotion of WASH. Some of the recent highlights have been

  • Regional WASH coalitions established to take locally appropriate action
  • International events celebrated nationally through exhibitions and campaigns
  • A TV debate on sanitation and a press conference on AfricaSan conducted

Particular emphasis is put on intersectoral cooperation with relevant actors - women's, youth, health and education networks.

Further sector coordination is taking place in a national forum for sanitation stakeholders comprising government, donors and civil society networks to discuss and seek common solutions for sanitation issues in Burkina Faso.

On 29 June 2010, President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso helped launch a new campaign to improve sanitation in the country. Successful advocacy work by sector professionals in Burkina Faso, including WSSCC’s National WASH Coalition, generated the high-level commitment in the country to provide 54,000 latrines annually to meet the country’s MDG sanitation target.
