Focus

The major focus of the WASH Ethiopia Movement is promoting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene issues throughout the country and contributing to reduction of existing high morbidity and mortality caused by lack of safe and adequate water, poor sanitation and hygiene for domestic use.

The WASH Ethiopia Movement focuses on a single theme each year:

  • 2004/5: Proper handwashing at critical times under the motto 'Your Health is in Your Hands'
  • 2005/6: Appropriate disposal of human wastes under the motto 'Use Latrine for Your Health and Dignity'
  • 2006/7: Water quality under the motto 'Keep Water Safe'
  • 2007/8: Related to the International Year of Sanitation, the focus of the campaign was sanitation

Major milestones and achievements

The achievements during 2008 are in the field of collaboration with media and awareness raising of the general public:

    • Sector learning and sharing facilitated in meetings
    • The International Year of Sanitation launched and celebrated on many occasions
    • Regional WASH chapters established
    • The WASH movement vitalised through activity update and strategic planning
    • Global Hand Washing Day celebrated with intensive media coverage
    • Media coverage assessed and a Media Forum held to improve knowledge of media professionals on water and sanitation
    • Journalist field trip conducted demonstrating the advantages of good access and the negative consequences of the lack of access to water supply and sanitation facilities
    • On the World Toilet Day, improved sanitation promoted presenting the latrine situation in Ethiopia and local practices regarding solid waste
    • Celebration of the national sanitation and hygiene festival

Previously the Ethiopian coalition has conducted baseline studies and evaluations each year focusing on WASH activities and contributed to the signing of an MoU on water, sanitation and hygiene with the Ministries of Health, Water Resources and Education, the development of National Sanitation Strategy and National Sanitation Protocol.

Ethiopia WASH Media Forum

The WASH Ethiopia movement established the WASH Media Forum in 2008. The objective is to trigger and maintain discussions between media representatives and WASH sector actors and outline how the sector can increase its engagement and partnership with the media. The creation of this Forum thus acknowledges the role of the media in creating awareness and promoting achievements as of paramount importance towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The coverage of WASH-related issues is very minimal compared to other topics. Moreover, journalists focus more on water project implementation than on sanitation and hygiene. It is therefore important that media stakeholders and WASH actors gather together to work closely and to update each other on new information.

Third WASH Media Forum event - the WASH Ethiopia Movement in collaboration with WaterAid Ethiopia and RiPPLE organized the third WASH Media Forum’s quarterly event in the Northern Region of Ethiopia, Bahir Dar and Banja woreda from 14 to 17 March 2009. The purpose was to share sanitation and hygiene experience of Banja woreda and facilitate an exchange between media representatives and WASH sector actors on sanitation and hygiene issues, World Water Day and transboundary waters.

The event had two components. The first was a field visit to Banja woreda in order to discover the sanitation and hygiene experiences of the region, combined with a brief discussion with the community, health and water offices and the administrative unit. The other part was a one day workshop on sanitation and hygiene issues, especially on the lessons learned from the field visit and on the World Water Day and Transboundary Waters activities.

About 40 people participated to the event: 25 journalists both from government and private media, 3 higher officials from the Ministries of Water Resources, Health and Education, 3 members from the WASH Ethiopia Movement and about 9 government officials and experts from the Amahra regional and woreda health and water bureaus.

Following the event several journalists developed stories and programs on sanitation issues, World Water Day and Transboundary Waters in their printed and broadcasting media (e.g. the Reporter, Ethiopian Herald, Capital, the Daily Monitor, Fortune, Addis Admass and Addis Zemene Newspapers, Ethiopian Television, Ethiopia Radio and Redio Fana).
