Jamaica
National WASH Coalition
As a result of a WASH Conference in 2005, WASH programmes are being carried out by a coalition of 10 Community-Based Organisations, 2 NGOs, 3 Public Sector Agencies and 2 Development Agencies.
Focus
The Jamaica WASH programme is a catalyst for partnerships among communities and civil society bodies, government and intergovernmental organisations and international development agencies. With support of the Jamaica WASH coalition member organisations, communities are interpreting the water and sanitation MDGs within their local settings and are working to address them alongside livelihoods issues. Partners are also coming together to develop a national sanitation policy - a tool to ‘join-up government’ for health and hygiene, environmental protection and development. Furthermore, WASH Promoters have been trained to carry out community assessments to select beneficiaries for sanitation grants and loans.
