Liberia
National WASH working group
In Liberia, one of the poorest countries in Africa, the overall proportions of the populations with access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation are low, rural areas being particularly underprivileged. To improve the situation and strengthen WASH sectoral collaboration, five Liberian civil society organisations formed the national WaSH working group in 2009 to work towards a joint advocacy initiative. About a third of the international and local NGOs active in Liberia have a WASH related focus, wherefore coordination of advocacy, awareness raising and educational campaigns on sanitation and hygiene practices are an important step towards the achievement of the MDGs.
