WASH Coalition members

The Diorano-WASH coalition includes among others: Directorate of Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Energy and Mines; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Education; WaterAid; UNICEF; Catholic Relief Services; Miarintsoa, Reseau Eau, other Malagasy NGOs, and private sector, mainly soap manufacturers.

Focus

The Diorano-WASH Initiative aims to improve hygiene behaviours that contribute to diseases linked to unsafe water through focusing on the three key hygiene messages and raising awareness on the importance of hygiene and sanitation and their links to disease and poverty. The three key messages are:

  • Wash your hands with soap
  • Use hygienic latrines
  • Transport and store water safely

Milestones and achievements

The Madagascar Diorano-Wash coalition worked intensively to improve the internal structures and operation during 2008. The national coordinator was elected in the general assembly held in January, a Diorano WASH charter, set up by a government decree, was signed in February. New regional Diorano-Wash committees have been set up in Betsiboka, Sofia and Vakinakaratra Region during the autumn.

Some highlights from the past years include:

  • Launching the International Year of Sanitation
  • Participation with a high ranking delegation to the World Water Week in Stockolm, Sweden 2008
  • Participation in the annual water, sanitation, hygiene sector review
  • Preparations for and launch of the Global Sanitation Fund including meetings, site visits and reporting
  • Participation in workshop on monitoring method of access to potable water and sanitation organized by JMP in Mali
  • Celebration of World Water Day, Global Handwashing Day, World Latrine Day since 2003
  • Sanitation in my Neighbourhood programme (2004/5)
  • Organisation of Madagascar World Water Week in March 2006 and 2007
  • Production of the Diorano-WASH Newsletter
  • Organisation of a national campaign on the three key messages 2007

Further, the National Diorano-Wash intensively cooperated with the Ministry of Water to elaborate a National Sanitation Policy and Strategy and a National Programme of access to potable water and sanitation. The Diorano-WASH Initiative is an excellent example that with commitment and an open mind, a little can go a long way.

The Diorano-Wash has achieved its objective to set up WASH committee in all regions and communes, and in forming "Schools friends of WASH", "Health care centres friends of WASH" in all parts of Madagascar.
