Maldives
While no specific WASH activities have taken place in the Maldives, a number of WASH related activities and events have taken place from 2001 onwards. These include:
- A school sanitation and hygiene survey for 50 schools was carried out in all the 20 atolls, leading to the selection of one atoll where PHAST (Participatory, Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation) workshops were conducted on the islands (Shaviyani atoll, 9 islands), for community members, health personnel and school teachers.
- A training of trainers workshop on PHAST methodologies was conducted for the school teachers on these islands, and teaching materials were developed and used during the workshops.
- A book and video in local language about the PHAST methodology have been developed.
- Based on the experience from the workshops, PHAST workshops were organised in the additional atolls.
- Hand washing and Hygiene posters have been developed and disseminated to the schools.
- Special programmes have been developed for primary school children to provide them with information and demonstrate how to wash hands properly using soap.
- Posters on safe rainwater collection and hand washing have been developed and distributed to the islands.
- Annual World Water Day celebrations have taken place where water, sanitation and hygiene information was provided through radio and TV and during workshops and meetings organised for the event.
