Pakistan

 WASH coalition

Pakistan's WASH related activities are coordinated by PIEDAR working in close cooperation with 25 partner schools Ministry of Health, Health Services Academy; UNICEF Pakistan Country Office and Concern Worldwide.

Main activities

The activities span four main areas (illustrated with examples from 2008):

WASH campaign

Focusing on advocacy and coalition building at national and provincial levels, and facilitation of policy development.

  • Participation in the Governmental and Civil Society processes to prepare a country paper and studies for South Asian Conference on Sanitation III
  • Advocacy on scaling up of sanitation and hygiene projects

Water and Sanitation Partnerships

Enabling partner communities to meet their water & sanitation needs, and to improve their health & environmental conditions.

  • Building up local knowledge & skills through IEC materials and training workshops.
  • Network for Environment and Endogenous Development (NEED), composed of 12 registered NGOs in Khanewal district, established with a mission of ‘sanitation for all’ in the district by promoting a culture of human dignity

Urban Management with Citizen Boards, Union Councils & Municipal Administrations

Strengthening mechanisms for collaboration between communities, local governments and other relevant stakeholders. Improving access to primary healthcare, water, sanitation and solid waste management services.

  • A rights-based approach to sanitation in ten low-income Union Councils of Rawalpindi city promoted
  • Community-based urban sanitation programs in Quetta, Baluchistan, evaluated to draw lessons for national and provincial policy and program design

Center of Environmental Education through Participatory Action Learning (CEEPAL)

Working with schools across Pakistan to share best practices for strengthening conservation values for primary environmental care, and promotion of hygienic habits among children.

  • WASH messages were disseminated in 180 schools across Pakistan.
  • IFH Home Hygiene Manual translated into Urdu and field tested in 25 communities across the country, the manual was thereafter launched in Islamabad and provincial capitals.

Achievements

The translation of the Home Hygiene Manual contributed considerably to localising the issues of sanitation and hygiene and exhibits efficient training tools. Other tangible impacts of the WASH programme in partner schools are well maintained filter water dispensers, functioning and clean school toilets, more hygienically managed school canteens, which has had the positive outcome of improved health leading to less absenteeism among children.
