Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage
Born out of a meeting convened by the World Health Organization in 2003 to explore ways of promoting household water treatment and safe storage (HHWT&SS) solutions, this group strives to encourage the estimated 1.2 billion people without access to improved water sources, plus those with improved but unsafe sources, to take charge of their own drinking water safety. Accordingly, they are urged to work as communities to implement effective, affordable and sustainable HHWT&SS interventions. Particular attention is paid to those most affected by waterborne diseases, such as children, immune-compromised persons, the poor, refugees and internally displaced persons. Stirred by the potential to dramatically improve the health of vulnerable populations through improved point-of-use water management, the group hopes to contribute to a significant reduction in waterborne diseases by promoting household water treatment and safe storage as a key component of water, sanitation and hygiene programmes. The network will accomplish this mission through advocacy, communication, research and implementation.
