In 2001, WSSCC and its partners launched the global WASH campaign. It has proven extremely successful in placing sanitation and hygiene on the international agenda due to the flexible structure of the organization and through the voluntary work of dedicated National Coordinators and Regional Representatives.

However, two major points should be noted:

1.    The name of the campaign, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for All or WASH, has now become a general concept referring to issues related to water, sanitation and hygiene and is therefore widely used in the public domain.

2.    WASH advocacy materials, its message and its logo have been broadly disseminated worldwide. However, there remains the possibility that the logo may be misused, consequently bringing into disrepute the name of the WSSCC, which is linked with the WASH logo.

For the best interests of WSSCC and its partners, it is therefore necessary to keep track of where and how the WASH brand is used. The secretariat, in consultation with its NCs and RRs, has developed the following logo usage guidelines:

• Every organization, institution or individual may, of course, use the term WASH, when referring to a general concept, as it deems fit.

• As a partner organization of WSSCC, including NCs and RRs and their organisations, collaborative agencies and members of the National WASH Coalitions, you are free to use all WASH advocacy materials, together with the logo, without notifying the Secretariat. However, please contact the Secretariat for advice if you have any doubt regarding usage of these materials or feel that a specific situation may be inappropriate.

• As an organization, institution or individual not operating under the umbrella of WSSCC, you are kindly asked to contact the Secretariat for permission to use WASH materials and/or the logo, and provide details of the planned use of the WASH brand, including posters, postcards and other publicity materials incorporating the logo.

• For all users, it is absolutely prohibited to use the WASH brand for commercial purposes.
