Focus

The major focus of the WASH Ethiopia Movement is promoting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene issues throughout the country and contributing to reduction of existing high morbidity and mortality caused by lack of safe and adequate water, poor sanitation and hygiene for domestic use.

The WASH Ethiopia Movement focuses on a single theme each year:

  • 2004/5: Proper handwashing at critical times under the motto 'Your Health is in Your Hands'
  • 2005/6: Appropriate disposal of human wastes under the motto 'Use Latrine for Your Health and Dignity'
  • 2006/7: Water quality under the motto 'Keep Water Safe'


Major milestones and achievements

  • Produced IEC materials on hand washing, sanitation and water quality issues and distributed throughout the country
  • Organized national familiarization workshop on hand washing, sanitation and water quality for government regional health, water resources and education bureaus’ representatives
  • Organized media briefing workshops on hand washing and sanitation for media professionals
  • Organized field trips for journalists to share field experience through local and national media
  • Launched WASH Ethiopia movement at national and regional levels under the motto's described above
  • Conducted baseline studies and evaluations each year focusing on WASH activities
  • Drafted WASH Ethiopia movement strategic plan 
  • Contributed to the signing of MoU on water, sanitation and hygiene among Ministries of Health, Water Resources and Education, the development of National Sanitation Strategy and National Sanitation Protocol
  • Contributed in bringing change in community behaviour and practice of hand washing and latrine use
  • The name of the WASH movement and its logo have become dominant (WATSAN changed to WASH)
