Background

The National Coordinator for WSSCC in Senegal is based within the National Office for Sanitation of Senegal (ONAS). This government institution was responsible for the national launch of the WASH campaign in Senegal, and together with other partners has since then used media, especially TV, and drama to spread the WASH messages further. ONAS and the WSSCC jointly launched the French version of its publication “Listening” during World Water Day 2004 celebrations in Senegal.

From 29 November - 3 December 2004, several Ministries led by the Hon. Mr. M. Lamine Ba, Minister for Prevention, Public Hygiene and Sanitation were instrumental in the successful outcome of the first ‘Global WASH Forum’ in Dakar, which enjoyed the patronage and presence of H.E. Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic, as well as other dignitaries and some 500 participants from over 75 countries.

Impact and major achievements

The momentum of the Global WASH Forum directly resulted in a number of WASH projects and initiatives. The Mayor of Sam, a municipality outside Dakar, was inspired to carry out a number of initiatives that will ensure full sustainable access to water and sanitation services to all its inhabitants.

Senegal also became the first country to establish, in 2004, a Ministry for Prevention, Public Hygiene and Sanitation, to coordinate sector activity.
