Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting, which is proving to be a viable and legitimate source of usable water for people living in areas of water scarcity, is dealt with by a number of networks and initiatives. Two of these are highlighted hereunder:

The Global Rainwater Harvesting Collective (HRWHC)

The Global Rainwater Harvesting Collective is a Netherlands registered charitable foundation whose board is drawn from international and local NGO's involved in water access.  It aims to empower rural communities by giving them control over their own water resources through the construction of drastically inexpensive and locally constructed rooftop catchments tanks. Successful projects have been implemented in Rajasthan and Sikkim in India. To find out more about the Collective, please go to www.globalrainwaterharvesting.org.

The International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance (IRHA)

The International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance was formed after the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg (South Africa, 2002) in response to an ever increasing water management crisis. In collaboration with prominent organizations and individuals in the field, the IRHA provides lobbying and advocacy platforms for rainwater harvesting, setting up a forum for its members to work together and share experiences for their mutual benefits, thus helping people living in water scarcity. The IRHA supports the growth of the rainwater harvesting movement and its current duties include implementing projects, making citizens and industries aware of rainwater advantages and promoting rainwater solutions in development agendas. Much more about the Alliance can be found by visiting the website at www.irha-h2o.org.
