Collaborative Working Group, hosted by the WSSCC
The Collaborative Working Group (CWG) joined the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) as thematic group for solid waste management (SWM) in 2004. It traces its origins back to a workshop held in Ittingen in Switzerland in 1995, where leading figures and agencies involved in international solid waste management met together to consider the “state of the art” and to plan a publishing programme to meet some of the needs that were identified. The group looks at the important role of effective solid waste management in reducing health risks and improving living conditions, and seeks to identify means of putting people at the centre of planning, implementation and monitoring. Following the WASH Forum in Dakar in 2004, the thematic group has oriented its work around the recommendations of the Dakar Statement and The Roadmap from Dakar towards Achieving the Millennium Development Goals on Sanitation and Water which calls for, among other things, a total waste management approach, involving both excreta and solid waste, as well as the efficient management of urban drainage systems. At the February 2006 Workshop in Kolkata in India, the group reaffirmed its commitment to good governance, capacity building, networking and knowledge sharing. A full report of the Workshop can be found here.
