Water Services and the Urban Poor
Services for the Urban Poor, hosted by WSSCC
Set up in 1994, the network dealing with Services for the Urban Poor (SUP) is hosted by the WSSCC and was created to further advocacy efforts on better access to water services for the poor in cities, and to define new strategies related to the management of these services. The network is supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate General for Cooperation to Development, and bolstered by the technical and scientific assistance of CERFE. CERFE is a non-profit research and training institute based in Rome which provides scientific knowledge, training, communication and networking opportunities for investigations into the quality of public and social services and urban development. The collaboration between CERFE and WSSCC also mirrors developments in the global 'water community' which highlight:
- The relevance of an urban dimension to the international debate on development policies
- The awareness that a struggle against poverty has to be regarded as a priority
- The centrality of social actors
- A broader consensus on WASH issues and
- The spreading and strengthening of dedicated networks
