Outcomes & Impact

The main intended outcomes of WSSCC’s work during 2008-2011 will be:

  • Innovative and successful ideas in sanitation and hygiene are identified and spread
  • The importance of sanitation and hygiene is more widely recognized
  • Existing and new support agencies put more resources into sanitation and hygiene work
  • Millions of poor people improve their sanitation and hygiene conditions.

The intended impact of WSSCC’s work will be improved health and quality of life for millions of people. That in turn will link with improved child survival, reduced population growth, improved educational opportunities, improved economic productivity, improved living environment, and reduced poverty.

There is generic written material that describes the causal links from these outcomes to this impact, so it is not duplicated here. The single most important causal link is reducing diarrhoea, which is the main disease associated with poor sanitation and hygiene. This is the central line running through all of WSSCC's work.

The successful attainment of those outcomes and that impact will depend on the work of many organizations, of which WSSCC is just one. Evaluating WSSCC's work against those outcomes will be complex and subjective, so WSSCC is not setting simplistic numerical targets for them.
