Guyana

Guyana has not had an active WASH Coalition before, but a group of actors have developed a collaboration which has led to a 2008 WASH action programme. The two main partners in this action programme are Global Perspective, and the Environmental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health.

Focus

The purpose of the 2008 - 2009 programme of action will be threefold:

  • firstly, to document current water, sanitation and hygiene practices in Guyana in order to develop intervention strategies;
  • secondly, to promote public awareness on WASH issues in general;
  • and thirdly, to foster closer collaboration for achieving improved water supply and sanitation in Guyana.

Activities will include the training of Community Health Facilitators to promote improved WASH practices; the production of a television documentary to raise awareness and promote WASH; conducting research to examine the linkages between water, sanitation and hygiene and health; and activities to build the WASH Coalition at national and local levels.
