Members of the WASH Coalition

Since the national launch of the WASH Campaign in March 2005, the Campaign had fallen back into inactivity. With the decision, in 2007, to merge the two international campaigns End Water Poverty Now and WASH into one national CIEPA/WASH Campaign and Coalition, the visibility of the campaign, the topic and its stakeholders has grown extensively. Currently the campaign is managed by the 'CNP-CIEPA/WASH', the National Steering Committee for the International Campaign for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. This Steering Committee contains a cross-section of the important civil society organisations active in water supply, sanitation and hygiene in Mali.

Focus

The main goal of the CIEPA/WASH Coalition is to influence the governmental policies and development partners to better understand the needs and interests of Mali's population with regards to WASH issues, through various advocacy and lobbying activities.

The large majority of Mali's poor does not have access to adequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene services.

Major milestones and activities

Major milestones since 2007 have included
·    the start of a sanitation discussion with the President of the Republic on the 19th of November 2007;
·    the active participation of CIEPA/WASH in the elaboration of the National Sanitation Policy;
·    the collection of 142,000 signatures for water and sanitation;
·    organisation of a press caravan in the framework of collaboration with journalists to demonstrate good practices, and to create awareness of the WASH problems in the remote areas of Mali.
