WASH Coalition building

Many organisations have taken initiatives to set up WASH programmes in Nigeria in the past years. At present, renewed attempts to set up a broad-based WASH coalition are underway, and a WASH Campaign launch is planned for later this year, with the government in the lead.

More information on the Nigeria WASH coalition and campaign will follow shortly.

  • 13 October 2008 - Nigerian expert elected to the WSSCC Steering Committee: Mr. Peter Cookey, a Nigerian national who is the founder and director of EarthWatch Magazine and has more than 17 years of experience in the environment and sustainable development fields, has been elected as the Anglophone Africa representative of the WSSCC Steering Commitee. He was elected by WSSCC members in Anglophone Africa or whose work is focused in the region. Read the whole press release here. International Year of Sanitation

20 May 2008 - Nigeria's first lady, Hajia Turai Yara'dua, launched the National Hand Washing Campaign in Abuja. "The act of hand-washing appears simple and often taken for granted, yet it is rated as the most important thing to do to prevent ill health. Many people do not practice the basic personal hygiene of washing the hands before cooking or serving food at homes/restaurants, of after using the toilets" she said.
