Uzbekistan

The National Coordinator for Uzbekistan was appointed in 2004. The first WASH programme was a small pilot project during 4 months in some schools in the Karakalpakstan area of Uzbekistan.

This entailed:

  • Promoting the WASH campaign;
  • Building capacity of the community groups on water, hygiene and sanitation (training of community representatives);
  • Raising awareness of youth in the rural schools on water, sanitation and hygiene (educational campaign);
  • Developing partnerships with stakeholders (workshops and seminars);
  • Involving mass-media to address the WASH problems;

Through the project, community members became involved in aspects of the project activity, became trainers, and gained skills on how to undertake an educational campaign. The project improved knowledge of youth on water, sanitation and hygiene, and through it partnerships were developed between different agencies and communities.

A manual for trainers and a number of educational materials were developed in the local language.
