WSSCC co-hosts Women and Sanitation Workshop in New Delhi
Workshop report
"Create effective demand - treat women as valued customers"
was one of the strategies for success presented during the
workshop entitled "Women and Sanitation" that was
held on the 20th and 21st of March 2006 in New Delhi, India.
The workshop was hosted by the Water Supply and Sanitation
Collaborative Council (WSSCC) together with the Rajiv Gandhi
Foundation (RGF), The Global Rainwater Harvesting Collective
(GRWHC), WaterAid India and UNICEF.
Bringing together some 55 participants from India, Bangladesh,
Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the successful
workshop provided both a lot of inspiration and a high level
of analysis regarding the roles played by women in sanitation
programmes. With over 70% of the participants being women,
the workshop had a markedly different character from most
sector workshops, which are often male dominated. However,
despite the female majority, much emphasis was placed on the
fact that we need to strive for a situation of gender equity,
where both men and women play an active part in sanitation
and hygiene programmes, especially at the community level.
Through a format of case study presentations, discussions
and working groups, the workshop resulted in three groups
of recommendations, concerning rural sanitation, urban sanitation
and school sanitation. Recommendations were developed for
government, for civil society, for India, as well as for the
South Asia region. As a first follow-up to the workshop, these
recommendations will be presented to the Indian Planning Commission
in a session planned for April 2006.
