WASH Activities during Sanitation and Hygiene Week and World Water Day (15-22 March)

WASH Partner in Bulgaria - Earth Forever

"We are organizing a WASH week with emphasis on EcoSan. On Friday 16 March, we inaugurate the first EcoSan pilot projects in cultural centres such as libraries and theatres as well as in average households. For this occasions we have foreseen lots of drinks for the people to try out the new toilets!!
On World Water Day we announce the kick-off of two more EcoSan projects in two villages. Our implementing partners are WASTE, a Dutch non-profit organisation, Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF) and the Hamburg Technical University (TUUH)."

WASH Partner in Burkina Faso - WaterAid Burkina Faso

"The water, sanitation and hygiene community in Burkina Faso is seizing the opportunity of the WASH Week and World Water Day to launch the international campaign entitled "End Water Poverty", jointly carried forward by IRC, SIMAVI, Streams of Knowledge, Tearfund and WaterAid. The official launch will take place at WWD in the city Ziniare, the native town of the President of the Republic of Burkina Faso. A Press Conference and Radio and TV announcements precede the official take-off, which will be initiated by Dr. Rui Lui Silva, regional coordinator of ECOWAS/WRCU (Water Resources Coordination Unit of Economic Community of the West African States)."

WASH Partner in Thailand - UNICEF

"UNICEF and WSSCC are joining forces at the exhibition organised by UNESCAP at World Water Day in Bangkok. We will display our sanitation and hygiene materials including the two publications 'Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion-Programming Guidance' and 'For Her, It's the Big issue, Putting women at the centre of water supply, sanitation and hygiene'.
Further activities include the demonstration of the use of the simple biological test methods aiming to detect faecal contamination of drinking water at households and in the field. These demonstrations will be carried out by the staff of the Research Laboratory of the Department of Health (Ministry of Public Health). With these joint activities, we hope to increase the public awareness on the protection of the already limited water resources, the need for safe drinking water and good hygiene, thereby strengthening people's efforts at community and home level to cope with water scarcity.";

WASH Partner in Pakistan - PIEDAR

"We are organising functions on World Water Day in Islamabad-Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta. Schoolchildren are preparing displays and skits on the themes of Coping with Water Scarcity and Hygiene and Sanitation. The events are taking place in low-income neighbourhoods that daily cope with water shortages and are affected by poor hygiene and sanitation. We hope to welcome Provincial Ministers and Environment Officials to the functions."

WASH Partner in the Philippines - Philippine Centre for Water Sanitation (PCWS)

"Sanitation and Hygiene Week is celebrated with 23 local governments of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in the Philippines, where only 29% of the population has access to water and where the implementation of WASH projects remains a challenge because of the difficult socio-political situation and the lack of funds. Exactly one year ago, PCWS initiated a project which resulted in the creation of WASH task forces within these respective local governments to assess the water and sanitation situation in every municipality. This resulted in each of them drafting a 2007-2010 Municipal WASH Action Plan. The Sanitation and Hygiene Week 2007 also notes the finalising of pilot projects demonstrating low-cost and community-based technologies in these municipalities."

WASH Partner in Ukraine - MAMA 86

"We start the Sanitation and Hygiene Week with a gathering of university students, ecoclub members and youth organisations at the Water Museum of Kiev City to discuss during a round table water scarcity in a global/regional and national/local context. On 16th March the first Water Policy Dialogue will be launched with the support of GWP.
Furthermore, as part of our activities on capacity building for EcoSan promotion, a joined Ukrainian-Finnish NGO seminar on Dry Toilets is taking place targeting future trainers, who will then participate in pilot projects in 10 different locations. These projects focus on WASH facilities in schools in rural areas. "

WASH Partner in Kyrgystan

"During the week of 15 until 22 March, we are reinforcing the partnerships we have built with several NGO's, Universities, schools and kindergartens, commercial and government organisations. This year we have activities not only on the national level but as well in the provinces Talas, Osh and Batken. We are launching a media campaign on hygiene and sanitation issues through radio and tv spots. Some NGO's have organised special activities, including an art competition and a festival to raise awareness amongst children as well as information sessions especially adapted to a young audience. We are also mobilizing people to clean the banks of rivers, since they are frequently using this water. Finally, we undertook major efforts to convince the Ministry of Education to involve all schools in our country to celebrate Sanitation and Hygiene Week and World Water Day. "
