Having benefitted from being a WSSCC member since 2009, I was incredibly fortunate to have participated in the Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene in October, with financial support from WSSCC.
Water sources are abundant in many upland communities in rural areas,
particularly in the Bukidnon Province., home of the watersheds and famous for
the scenic and historic Mount Kitanglad.

The positive momentum that is supporting the sanitation and hygiene campaign in Nigeria owes a great deal to Engr. Ebele Okeke, WSSCC’s “WASH Ambassador” in the country. The former head of Nigerian civil service and once the Permanent Secretary in Nigeria’s Ministry of Water Resources, Engr. Okeke has been influential in pushing sanitation issues throughout the country since her appointment in September 2010. She is working with the press and the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) to drive high-level advocacy and campaigns towards addressing the significant challenges in sanitation and hygiene.
L’élan positif visant à soutenir la campagne d’assainissement et d’hygiène au Nigéria a été rendu possible en bonne partie grâce à Mme Ebele Okeke, « l’ambassadrice WASH » du WSSCC au Nigéria. Mme Okeke, ancienne cheffe de la fonction publique et secrétaire permanente du ministère des Ressources en eau du Nigéria, a permis de placer au premier plan les questions liées à l’assainissement au niveau national depuis sa nomination en septembre 2010. Mme Okeke travaille en collaboration avec la presse et l’Équipe spéciale nationale sur l’assainissement (NTGS) en vue de renforcer le plaidoyer de haut niveau et les campagnes visant à relever les défis importants posés par l’assainissement et l’hygiène.
With the 2011 elections in view it is highly important that the incoming administration prioritise Sanitation, Hygiene and Water Supply for the large percentage of Nigerians without access. In light of this, the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) nominated Women WASH Ambassador led the National Task Group on Sanitation to organize a political dialogue to engage with political parties in Nigeria on their sanitation and water agenda for the country.
Engr. Ebele Okeke is committed to improving sanitation and hygiene practices in Nigeria, and throughout Africa. She advocates for the development, financing and implementation of a National plan for Sanitation in Nigeria involving all stakeholders from federal, state, local government, development partners and the civil society.
