The Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) programme in Malawi marks the end of its initial capacity building activities in Phalombe, Balaka and Ntchisi - three of the six districts, in southern Malawi where its programme is currently being implemented through a strong collaborative effort by key national, district and community partners.
The planning period is over, and now the Global Sanitation Fund programme is moving ahead with vigour in Malawi. The first Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS)-style triggering took place in Kalembo and Nsamala Traditional Authorities (TA), which are both in Balaka District.
The Global Sanitation Fund (GSF) programme in Malawi continues to move forward strongly with the signing of sub-grantees following the first funding round. The agreements that have been entered into are for between 2 and 4 years, and total nearly USD 2 million (38% of the total GSF grant).
Water sources are abundant in many upland communities in rural areas,
particularly in the Bukidnon Province., home of the watersheds and famous for
the scenic and historic Mount Kitanglad.

On 23 May, during the state opening of the 2011/2012 budget meeting of parliament in Lilongwe, President Professor Bingu wa Mutharika, singled out the country's new WSSCC-funded Global Sanitation Fund programme for the support it will provide for implmentation of the country's national sanitation policy.
