Summary

The one-hour WASH radio broadcast in Bulgarian commemorates Global Handwashing Day. Hand washing is – and always was – a crucial practice for public health. This becomes clear once you hear the two interviews with Dr Tencho Tenev, Chief Health Inspector of Bulgaria, and Mrs Diana Dimitrova, archaeologist. In addition to the interviews, the radio broadcast also introduces listeners to the Clean Hands Initiative. Last but not least, Mrs Diana Iskreva, WSSCC’s National Coordinator for Bulgaria, promotes the public hand washing event taking place in Stara Zagora.

About the author

The Bulgarian WASH Coalition focuses on two problems: lack of improved school sanitation and the deteriorating rural sanitation infrastructure. Its work involves women, youth, and the elderly, especially those of Roma origin.

The coalition develops materials to educate teachers and children about WASH issues, as part of its advocacy for special state programmes to improve sanitation in schools.

Initiatives targeting rural areas include training communities in rural waste management, such as building ‘ecosan’ latrines (solid waste treated and recycled as fertilizer to improve soil fertility).
