Summary

CARIBSAN, the Caribbean Workshop on Sanitation was held on 28 and 29 April 2008. In support of the main objectives of the International Year of Sanitation, the participants of the workshop made a number of commitments including: develop national sanitation policies, assess financial needs and explore alternative and innovative options, increase awareness and commitment of actors at all levels, mobilize governmental counterparts and existing alliances, promote sustainable and traditional solutions based on demand, develop and strengthen human and institutional capacity, and increase sustainability and effectiveness of available sanitation solutions.

About the author

Formed in 2005, the Jamaican WASH Coalition now comprises 17 national and international organizations. Educating and mobilizing community are core activities, as is building partnerships between communities and WASH stakeholders. To that end, the coalition has trained WASH promoters (emissaries to improve hygiene behaviours) and also undertake research through the Women’s Resource & Outreach Centre. It has also aided in the development of a national sanitation policy enacted in 2009.
