Summary

Burkina Faso’s Head of State was present to Chair the launch of the country’s National Campaign of Advocacy and Mobilization for Access to Adequate Sanitation in June 2010. As the ceremony ended he helped a small girl wash her hands after using a latrine. The European Union Representative told the meeting that “considering the growth of the population the access to sanitation actually decreases each year.” Burkina Faso must build 54,000 latrines annually to reach its 2015 target of 324,000 new latrines.

About the author

The WASH Coalition in Burkina Faso has grown since its inception in 2003 to include a myriad of NGOs, the University of Ouagadougou, the government, and the West Africa Water Partnership. Towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for sanitation and water, the coalition created three regional coalitions to reach women, youth, education networks, and religious leaders. Regional work focuses on increasing knowledge of, and access to sanitation through programmes such as community-led total sanitation (CLTS). In 2010, the government pledged to construct 55 000 latrines each year to provide access to improved sanitation for 54% of the population by 2015.
