Summary

The Cameroon WASH Coalition was officially launched on 5 May 2009 in Yaounde in the presence of the Prime Minister. The WSSCC Executive Director, Jon Lane, explained the differences between WSSCC, the WASH initiative and the WASH Coalition. He welcomed the fact that the Cameroon WASH Coalition had many government institutions involved, as experience showed progress usually happens when governments provided support, a sense of direction, and create a sanitation policy. It was people themselves who, with the Government’s help, would change the situation. Other speakers included representatives from UNICEF and the World Bank.

About the author

Lack of cooperation among stakeholders in the WASH sector was the spark that incited the WASH Coalition in Cameroon in 2008. The following year a WASH Coalition comprising national and international partners began promoting WASH for all by encouraging the government to finance and prioritize actions on all levels. Objectives of the coalition include launching a qualitative survey of the attitudes and practices of the rural population on WASH (and thereby raising awareness); assisting the government to establish a national sanitation plan; and building partnerships at all levels.
