Summary

This is a report of a conference held on 28-29 April 2008 in Kingston, Jamaica, entitled, “Integration of Sanitation Policies in National Development Plans in the Caribbean Region”. Its main recommendations included: the need to provide affordable solutions; changing public perceptions of latrines as viable solutions; and promoting the reuse and recycling of waste. The need to improve sanitation in schools was also stressed as well as the income-generating potential of on-site sanitation.

About the author

Formed in 2005, the Jamaican WASH Coalition now comprises 17 national and international organizations. Educating and mobilizing community are core activities, as is building partnerships between communities and WASH stakeholders. To that end, the coalition has trained WASH promoters (emissaries to improve hygiene behaviours) and also undertake research through the Women’s Resource & Outreach Center. It has also aided in the development of a national sanitation policy enacted in 2009.
