Summary

Community-led total sanitation (CLTS) is a programme that works to empower a community to change their behaviour in regards to sanitation. This demand based approach focuses on stopping open defecation and the safe disposal of excreta, waste water, and solid waste. CLTS was implemented in 20 villages in Burkina Faso, resulting in raised awareness on sanitation issues, empowerment of the community, behaviour change, and open defecation free communities.

About the author

The WASH Coalition in Burkina Faso has grown since its inception in 2003 to include a myriad of NGOs, the University of Ouagadougou, the government, and the West Africa Water Partnership. Towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for sanitation and water, the coalition created three regional coalitions to reach women, youth, education networks, and religious leaders. Regional work focuses on increasing knowledge of, and access to sanitation through programmes such as community-led total sanitation (CLTS). In 2010, the government pledged to construct 55 000 latrines each year to provide access to improved sanitation for 54% of the population by 2015.
