Summary

Only 25% of Liberians have access to safe drinking water, 14% to human waste collection and disposal facilities, and 5% practice safe hygiene. Of slightly over 3.5 million Liberians, nearly two thirds live on less than US$ 1 a day. The Coalition held five WASH forums, 10 lobby meetings with stakeholders, and several events on World Toilet Day, and worked in schools and with the media. Challenges included the high illiteracy rate, low public interest in WASH issues, and the difficulty of access to officials and to documents. The WASH sector is under-used, under-funded and a low priority to government and donors.

About the author

The Liberian WASH Coalition began in 2008. It lobbies the government and donors for policy change and financial support for WASH. Alongside, the coalition works to educate and mobilize the public around WASH issues. The coalition organized five WASH forums in 2009 to raise awareness of the issues, and foster partnerships between civil society, community members, and government officials.
