Summary

On a national level, partners convened at the Caribbean Workshop on Sanitation (CARIBSAN) in 2008. In 2009, the Jamaican government committed to action with a sanitation policy, implementation of sanitation and hygiene projects in schools, and creation of a task force on sanitation. The plan of action for 2009 included mobilizing and educating, training environmental monitors, mobilizing resources for the local sanitation and hygiene programme, linking WASH/sanitation to sustainable livelihoods projects, extending action research in communities through Women’s Resource and Outreach Centre, and training in different modalities for sanitation.

About the author

Formed in 2005, the Jamaican WASH Coalition now comprises 17 national and international organizations. Educating and mobilizing community are core activities, as is building partnerships between communities and WASH stakeholders. To that end, the coalition has trained WASH promoters (emissaries to improve hygiene behaviours) and also undertake research through the Women’s Resource & Outreach Centre. It has also aided in the development of a national sanitation policy enacted in 2009.
