Summary

The Kenya WASH Coalition is involved in steering national environmental activities to speed access to improved hygiene and sanitation in the country. Key activities include developing a national schools health policy and guidelines, reviewing the country’s sanitation sector and analysing gaps, marking National Handwashing Day and World Toilet Day, and raising awareness through funds from the Global Sanitation Fund. Partnerships with the private sector are being developed, and forums with parliamentarians. Lack of experience and a shortage of funds have been key challenges.

About the author

The Kenyan WASH Coalition merged with the Inter-Agency Coordination Committee in 2010. To meet the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) for sanitation and water, the committee focuses on regional learning, strengthening partnerships, and sharing local experiences (particularly of youth). Its work with youth includes hygiene behaviour change programmes in schools (called participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation methodology, PHAST), and developing WASH guidelines for schools.
