Summary

This paper aims to give insights into the issues and lessons learned in Madagascar related to coalitions, with the particular example of the Diorano-WASH coalition. By increasing visibility of the problems of sanitation through the Diorano-WASH campaign, the public awareness and widespread public support that it has achieved reaches beyond what any single member could have achieved alone.

About the author

Called Diorano-WASH, Madagascar’s WASH Coalition includes members from myriad groups. It focuses on improving hygiene behaviour three key messages: wash your hands with soap; use hygienic latrines; and transport and store water safely. The coalition also works alongside the government: it contributed to the Madagascar Action Plan, National Sanitation Policy and Strategy, and the National Programme of Access to Potable Water and Sanitation.
