Summary

Many people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) die prematurely as a result of water and faecal borne diseases, which are preventable. The WASH Coalition supported activities to integrate WASH into HIV/AIDS in Uganda through advocacy workshops for National Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (NACWOLA), monitoring of NACWOLA supported activities, and advocacy in the media. Increased awareness of sanitation and hygiene by NACWOLA members promoted prevention of opportunistic infections due to HIV/AIDS.

About the author

In 2003, the National Sanitation Working Group (NSWG) was set up to coordinate and promote hygiene and sanitation work throughout the country. The NSWG includes government ministries, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Kampala City Council, development and bilateral partners and donors, and non-government organizations (NGOs). Most recently NSWG focuses on addressing behaviour change, through effective use of the media and on the disposal of garbage and human excreta in peri-urban areas of Kampala.
