Summary

WSSCC Bangladesh is taking a bottoms up, people-centred approach to achieve sanitation throughout Bangladesh. The coalition focuses on consolidating the grassroots mechanism at the local and national level. One of the key lessons learnt is that the government is more sensitive to the idea of grassroots participation while leaders are continued to be exposed to the ongoing dialogue for change.

About the author

The Government of Bangladesh aims to provide universal sanitation to its citizens by 2013 in addition to reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for sanitation and water. To assist this effort, the Bangladesh WASH Coalition, comprising national and international NGOs, government departments, development partners and academia, organizes grassroots consultations with community members (particularly those marginalized). These consultations give voice to the poor, and also raise their awareness of WASH issues. Through 2009, the coalition organized 556 meetings, reaching over 11,000 people.
