Summary

The Kenya government commits itself to ensure that 90% of households will have access to sanitation by 2015 in the National Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Policy. Implementation of the policy will greatly increase the demand for sanitation, hygiene, food safety, improve housing, use of safe drinking water, waste management, and vector control at the household level and encourage communities to take responsibility for improving the sanitary conditions of their immediate environment. This Rapid Assessment will identify gaps and challenges still not addressed as well as harmonize key strategies.

About the author

The Kenyan WASH Coalition merged with the Inter-Agency Coordination Committee in 2010. To meet the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) for sanitation and water, the committee focuses on regional learning, strengthening partnerships, and sharing local experiences (particularly of youth). Its work with youth includes hygiene behaviour change programmes in schools (called participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation methodology, PHAST), and developing WASH guidelines for schools.
