Summary

The School-Community (S-C) WASH Project focuses on safe water use, as well as improved sanitation and hygiene through school and community actions. The project started in two provinces in 2008 and two years later, it has been implemented in six provinces. Promising performance indicators include a 50% increase from the baseline of hand washing with soap by school children, as well as their family members. While several problems arose—such as latrine collapses in the rainy season—solutions have also been identified—using new technical designs to bypass flooding problems.

About the author

Initiated in 2008, the Cambodia WASH Coalition targets schools and communities with messages about positive behaviour change – water conservation, washing hands with soap, and using low-cost latrines (e.g. CLTS programmes). With broad support from the government, international organizations, and others, the coalition’s school-community project has expanded across six provinces. This project provides schools and government departments with training sessions and materials about positive WASH behaviours, and has established self-monitoring systems on sanitation for communities and schools.
