Summary

In 2010, the Madagascar WASH Coalition decided to use scouts as promoters of hygiene messages. It enlisted almost 700 scouts and worked with them on capacity-building. Street demonstrations, exhibitions of good practice, debates, and film shows were organized. Challenges included involving people, assessing the impacts, the weakness of local branches, and volunteering. The way forward will include scaling up the idea, advocacy, and a district approach.

About the author

Called Diorano-WASH, Madagascar’s WASH Coalition includes members from myriad groups. It focuses on improving hygiene behaviour three key messages: wash your hands with soap; use hygienic latrines; and transport and store water safely. The coalition also works alongside the government: it contributed to the Madagascar Action Plan, National Sanitation Policy and Strategy, and the National Programme of Access to Potable Water and Sanitation.
