Summary

In 2010, the Coalition conducted a personal and home hygiene study in several flood-prone communities in order to make recommendations to local governments, NGOs, communities and households. It found that people used sunlight to energize themselves and to disinfect their possessions; that home hygiene is family-centered, focused on relationships with household members; and that it is directly linked to local architecture. Personal hygiene with an emphasis on cleanliness is linked to home, emotion, and mental hygiene and harmonious household relationships. Home and personal hygiene are in fact regarded as forms of social insurance against emergencies.

About the author

The Philippines WASH coalition has a wide membership, including about 20 organizations, over 30 local government authorities, national government agencies, communities and individuals. The Coalition aims to increase water supply and sanitation coverage in communities most in need of them, and has identified five provinces in Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) as its focus area. This work includes promoting low-cost technologies, education and the building capacities of local government to enable poor communities in disadvantaged regions to achieve access to affordable safe water and sanitation.
