Summary

The Coalition organized a media campaign to raise awareness about sanitation, hygiene, and diseases. The proper use of latrines and proper garbage disposal were identified as WASH themes in the campaign. Two radio stations aired WASH messages four times daily for a month and WASH footage was edited into a 15 minute documentary which aired for over a month. The media campaign resulted in increased awareness among the public, government measures to prevent flooding and blockages of drainage channels in slum areas, and slum dwellers taking initiative to clean the drains and public latrines instead of waiting for caretakers.

About the author

In 2003, the National Sanitation Working Group (NSWG) was set up to coordinate and promote hygiene and sanitation work throughout the country. The NSWG includes government ministries, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Kampala City Council, development and bilateral partners and donors, and non-government organizations (NGOs). Most recently NSWG focuses on addressing behaviour change, through effective use of the media and on the disposal of garbage and human excreta in peri-urban areas of Kampala.
