Summary

The Ukraine WASH Coalition helped organized World Toilet Day celebrations on 19 November 2008. The theme of this year’s World Toilet Day was “We deserve better” and aimed to promote local actions for improving sanitary conditions. Activities on World Toilet Day in Ukraine included the opening of a new stand display, demonstration of a film for International Year of Sanitation, and promotion of hygiene and hand washing. An award ceremony for winners of the journalist competition, “Adequate Sanitation for Every Citizen of Ukraine!” was also held.

The Ukraine WASH Coalition engages in restoring water, sanitation and hygiene to a higher position on the political agenda and creates public awareness, especially for and with children and women. They have focused their efforts on building a strong National Coalition in order to consolidate stakeholders’ efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals on water supply and sanitation and in promoting public involvement in policy-making processes.
