Summary

Significant increases in primary school enrolment following the introduction of Free Primary Education and the abolition of fees and levies at the primary school level has put additional pressures on an already inadequate infrastructure. The WASH initiative in Kenya wishes to involve pupils, teachers, and parents in having a say towards water, sanitation, and hygiene activities in their schools and surrounding communities through School Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SSHE) programmes. The review showed that most of the schools do not have adequate water and sanitation facilities. While there has been progress, there still remains a lot to be done.

About the author

The Kenyan WASH Coalition merged with the Inter-Agency Coordination Committee in 2010. To meet the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) for sanitation and water, the committee focuses on regional learning, strengthening partnerships, and sharing local experiences (particularly of youth). Its work with youth includes hygiene behaviour change programmes in schools (called participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation methodology, PHAST), and developing WASH guidelines for schools.
