Summary

Overall, there is great inequality between countries in Latin America and within the countries themselves. Rural populations and inhabitants of marginal urban areas have the worst conditions. Ten countries participated in the Latin America consultation and after working in groups to discuss the issues, their recommendations include: establish alliances within and between countries (both regionally and worldwide), focus financing on the poor and recognize the need for subsidies, provide opportunities for resource exchange between local governments, and have a national public policy that integrates the goals and is directed at the poorest populations.

About the author

The Colombia WASH coalition comprises various national and international organizations, and is endorsed by the government as part of its commitment to fulfil the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Coordinated by the Cinara Institute, the coalition focuses on rural and marginalized urban communities lacking access to WASH services. The tool to reach these communities is the periodical Aquacol Bulletin – produced by and for community members since 2008. Financially freestanding through advertising, the publication increases knowledge about WASH issues and fosters partnerships within and between communities by sharing local experiences.
