Summary

Participants from four countries (Burkina Faso, Niger, Benin, and Mali) were presented with and discussed five themes: 1) WASH – STREAMS and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); 2) creation of coalitions; 3) funding of the water and sanitation sector; 4) national policy process; and 5) local communities. Overall, sanitation is considered a neglected sector, faced with disparities in national level strategies and local level knowledge and capabilities. Recommendations include strengthening partnerships, greater emphasis on advocacy and capacity building, more avenues for sharing information, and new approaches involving learning programmes with various actors.

About the author

The WASH Coalition in Burkina Faso has grown since its inception in 2003 to include a myriad of NGOs, the University of Ouagadougou, the government, and the West Africa Water Partnership. Towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for sanitation and water, the coalition created three regional coalitions to reach women, youth, education networks, and religious leaders. Regional work focuses on increasing knowledge of, and access to sanitation through programmes such as community-led total sanitation (CLTS). In 2010, the government pledged to construct 55 000 latrines each year to provide access to improved sanitation for 54% of the population by 2015.
